Fred Williams: Richard Copeland has learned that Fred Williams, an important part of the band in its early years has died. In Richard’s words: “There probably aren’t many MCCBers left who remember Fred. He died on April 28. Apparently his obit was published only in the Chestnut Hill Local, a small neighborhood weekly print-only paper and it wasn’t seen by anyone that I know until just now. Fred was a big help in the tuba section in the early days of the MCCB. He could tell us everything about any march we ever played, including gossipy personal-life info about the composers. He had to stop coming due to night-driving issues, and then he encountered health problems which ultimately resulted in his having both legs amputated below the knee. I visited him several times after this. He was wheelchair-bound, but he was still the same old Fred. I will miss him.” Here is his obituary.
